What Are Popular Types of Holiday Custom Merchandise Available for Businesses in Canada?

The most popular holiday custom merchandise in Canada is fleece and jackets, t-shirts, drinkware and blankets. ASI's 2026 Canadian survey asked which promo items people would be most excited to receive. Fleece and jackets drew 51%. T-shirts followed at 49%, drinkware at 42% and blankets at 37%.

Winter explains the order. In Calgary, the average overnight low sits below freezing from October to April. That's Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 data. People wear warm layers for seven months of the year.

Merch Express has decorated custom apparel in Calgary since 1994. This guide covers holiday merch for schools, sports teams, non-profits and events. Most gift guides skip the Canadian rules. This one covers CRA gift limits, 2026 Canada Post cutoffs and tariffs.

Which holiday merchandise do Canadians most want to receive?

Canadians rank useful, warm items above novelty gifts. ASI's 2026 Ad Impressions Study asked Canadians which promotional items they'd be most excited to get.

Rank Item Share of Canadians
1 Food gifts 53%
2 Fleece and jackets 51%
3 T-shirts 49%
4 Drinkware 42%
5 Blankets 37%

Alberta flipped the top spot. Albertans ranked fleece and jackets first, then food gifts, blankets, drinkware and t-shirts. ASI doesn't publish provincial sample sizes, so read the provincial order as a signal.

Food tops the national list, but a box of chocolates is gone by New Year's. A fleece keeps your logo in view all winter. ASI's U.S. data puts fleece at about 9,000 lifetime impressions, the highest of any category. In the Canadian edition, 89% said a promo item improves their view of the advertiser.

What holiday merch works for schools, teams, non-profits and events?

Each of these four groups buys holiday merch for a different job. Schools need spirit wear and fundraisers, and teams need warm layers. Non-profits thank volunteers, while events need staff gear and takeaways.

What holiday merch should schools order for winter?

School holiday orders cover spirit wear, staff gifts and fundraisers. Hoodies, crewnecks and toques get students through outdoor recess at minus 15°C. The Merch Express custom school apparel collection includes youth sizes, sweatpants, softshell jackets and knit toques.

Fundraisers work better through a webstore than a paper order form. Each family picks sizes and pays at checkout. Merch Express sorts every order by name, so staff never count cash envelopes. Webstores have no order minimums, and the school sets its own products and prices.

Winter concerts and staff parties suit one themed piece. The school collection lists a small-run custom knit ugly holiday sweater. It starts at $141.71 each at 100+ pieces.

What are good holiday gifts for sports teams?

Give teams the layers they wear to the rink or gym: toques, hoodies, sweatpants and jackets. Hockey, basketball and volleyball run through the Canadian winter. Players use the gift right away.

The custom sports apparel collection covers hockey, soccer, basketball and volleyball. It lists sublimated jerseys from $29.99, Nike team beanies and The North Face jackets. Split the order by role. Give players matching toques or hoodies, and give coaches and team managers a premium jacket.

What holiday gifts work for non-profit volunteers?

Give volunteers gear they'll wear at the next shift, such as toques, puffy vests and hoodies. A matching vest also marks volunteers at a winter food drive or outdoor event.

The custom apparel for non-profits collection starts at basic price points. Knit cuff toques list from $10.93 each at 100+ pieces. For long volunteer lists, custom promotional items cost less per person. Tote bags, mugs and journals all work.

A webstore can also turn holiday merch into a small revenue line. Supporters buy branded hoodies at the price your organization sets. Merch Express prints in-house and sorts each package by name, so your staff skip the packing.

What holiday merch suits corporate and community events?

Holiday events need two kinds of merch: staff gear and attendee takeaways. Staff at a holiday market need a warm layer people can spot. Guests need something small enough to carry home.

The custom event apparel collection includes puffy vests, softshells, trucker caps and toques. It also lists the custom knit ugly holiday sweater for office parties. For guest takeaways, browse ornaments, drinkware and blankets in the custom promotional items catalogue.

Holiday parties have their own CRA rule. A party open to all staff isn't taxable at $150 or less per person. That limit includes taxes.

Which apparel categories make the best holiday merchandise?

Six apparel categories cover holiday orders: t-shirts, polos, jerseys, sweatshirts, outerwear and headwear. Match the category to the recipient and the season.

Category Best holiday use Usual decoration
T-shirts Event staff, school concerts, layering Screen print or digital print
Polos Client-facing staff at holiday events Embroidery
Jerseys Team gifts before winter tournaments Sublimation
Sweatshirts Staff, student and team gifts Screen print or embroidery
Outerwear Premium staff and client gifts Embroidery
Headwear Bulk gifts, volunteers, outdoor crews Embroidery

Are custom t-shirts a good holiday gift for staff?

Custom t-shirts suit volume more than premium gifting. They're the cheapest way to dress a whole event crew or school choir. The CRA lists logo t-shirts as items of small value, outside the $500 employee gift limit. In winter, long sleeves layer under a hoodie. Merch Express offers custom t-shirts in short sleeve, long sleeve and youth sizes.

When do custom polos make sense for the holidays?

Polos fit staff who face customers during the holiday rush. Retail counters, holiday markets and client events all call for a collar. An embroidered chest logo looks like a uniform, and staff wear it to work. Long sleeve custom polos cover cooler indoor venues, with ladies' fits in the range too.

Why give custom jerseys as team holiday gifts?

Players wear a new jersey within weeks if it arrives before a January tournament. Merch Express makes custom jerseys for hockey, volleyball, soccer and basketball. Sublimation dyes the design into the fabric, so it won't crack or peel. That matters for a jersey washed after every game.

Are custom sweatshirts the safest holiday apparel pick?

Hoodies and crewnecks come closest to a gift everyone wears. Fleece ranked second nationally and first in Alberta in ASI's survey. ASI's U.S. data also shows 87% of people keep fleece for more than a year. Merch Express custom sweatshirts include pullover hoodies, crewnecks and zip-ups, printed or embroidered.

When are custom outerwear gifts worth the higher price?

Outerwear costs the most per piece and lasts the longest. Save it for senior staff, coaches, board members and top clients. The custom outerwear range covers fleece, softshells, vests and winter jackets. Brands include Stormtech, The North Face and Columbia. Keep the CRA rule in mind, since a jacket counts toward the $500 employee limit.

Why are custom toques the most practical bulk holiday gift?

Toques cost less than any other winter garment and fit almost everyone. Calgary's overnight lows stay below freezing from October to April, so a toque gets real use. Merch Express custom headwear includes knit toques, snapbacks, fitted caps and Stampede hats. Embroidery holds up well on knit, so the logo lasts the season.

Which promotional products work best as holiday gifts?

Drinkware and blankets rank fourth and fifth in ASI's Canadian survey, at 42% and 37%. The Merch Express custom promotional items catalogue lists sherpa fleece blankets and Stanley mugs. It also carries gift sets, journals and wood ornaments. Ornaments start under $4 each at 150+ units. Order promotional items first, since they take about 15 business days.

How does the CRA tax holiday gifts in Canada?

The CRA lets employers give non-cash gifts worth up to $500 per employee each year, tax-free. Small logo items don't count toward that limit. Cash and most gift cards count as taxable income.

Gift Recipient CRA treatment
Logo t-shirt or mug Employee Small-value item, outside the $500 limit
Hoodie, jacket, blanket or toque Employee Tax-free if the year's non-cash gifts total $500 or less
Gift card Employee Taxable as near-cash, unless it meets every CRA non-cash condition
Holiday party open to all staff Employees Not taxable at $150 or less per person
Food, wine or gift basket Client 50% deduction limit, in the CRA's view

The $500 limit includes sales tax, so the real ceiling varies by province. By our calculation, a $476 gift plus 5% GST hits the cap in Alberta. In Ontario, 13% HST lowers the pre-tax ceiling to about $442.

Client gifts follow a different rule. The CRA addressed this in interpretation document 2003-0000025. Food and drink gifts to clients face the 50% limit. That applies even when a business books them as advertising. A branded blanket isn't food or drink. Confirm your own case with an accountant, because this guide isn't tax advice.

When should you order holiday merchandise to arrive on time?

Approve your mockup by the date in the table below. Canada Post's 2026 holiday guidelines set the last national shipping dates between major centres. Merch Express starts production after mockup approval. Digital print takes about 5 business days. Screen print and embroidery take about 10, and promotional items about 15.

National shipping service Ship by Approve digital print by Approve screen print or embroidery by Approve promotional items by
Regular Parcel Dec 10 Dec 3 Nov 26 Nov 19
Expedited Parcel Dec 14 Dec 7 Nov 30 Nov 23
Xpresspost Dec 22 Dec 15 Dec 8 Dec 1

We counted back in business days and skipped Remembrance Day. Add a few days for artwork changes. Regional Regular Parcel runs to Dec 16, and local delivery runs to Dec 21.

Two more dates matter this year. Hanukkah starts Dec 4, so approve those orders by mid-November. For U.S. clients, Expedited Parcel USA closes Dec 14. The U.S. suspended its US$800 duty-free threshold on Aug 29, 2025. Postal parcels under that value now need duties paid before they cross.

Last year's strike warnings don't apply. Canada Post workers ratified new agreements in June 2026, and they run to January 31, 2029.

Missed a cutoff? Merch Express takes rush orders for a rush fee. Calgary customers can also get same-day pickup on a pullover hoodie or cotton t-shirt. Order before noon, Monday to Friday. Send your logo and quantities to Merch Express for a free quote.

Do 2026 tariffs change the cost of holiday apparel?

Yes, for some garments. Since Sept 8, 2026, Canada has charged a 50% counter-tariff on U.S.-origin clothing. The Department of Finance list covers t-shirts, sweaters, jackets and gloves.

Origin depends on where a factory made the garment, not the brand or the warehouse. A U.S. brand sewn in Honduras generally doesn't count as U.S.-origin under Canada's marking rules. Ask for the country of origin before you approve a quote.

How do you design holiday merch people keep wearing?

Keep the logo small, leave the year off, and pick winter themes over Christmas-only art. Each choice affects whether people still wear the gift in March.

Keep the logo small. A 2025 Custom Ink employee survey found only 23% want large, prominent branding on a gift. A left-chest embroidery or small sleeve print looks like regular clothing.

Leave off the year. A "Holiday Party 2026" print looks dated by February. Canada disposed of almost 1.1 million tonnes of apparel in 2021. That figure comes from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Design for every holiday. In the 2021 Census, 53.3% of Canadians reported a Christian affiliation, and 34.6% reported no religion. Snowflakes, toques and "Happy Holidays" work for a whole team.

A company gift also takes pressure off staff. A Harris Poll for Express Employment Professionals surveyed 500 Canadian hiring managers. Of them, 47% said employees feel compelled to buy gifts for direct reports. One company gift for everyone can replace the office gift swap.

What are good branded holiday gifts for clients?

What is the maximum tax-free gift for employees?

The CRA rules cover whether a gift is a taxable benefit for the employee. Non-cash gifts up to $500 are tax-free for staff. Whether your business can deduct the cost is a separate question for your accountant.

Are gift cards taxable for employees in Canada?

Yes, with the school's permission. Send a vector file, since vector artwork avoids the Merch Express artwork fee. JPEG and PNG files may need redrawing first, which can add the fee.

How far in advance should I order holiday merchandise?

Approve promotional item mockups about three weeks before the ship date. Apparel needs about two weeks. For national Regular Parcel in 2026, approve promotional items by Nov 19. Approve screen-printed or embroidered apparel by Nov 26.

What is a thoughtful but inexpensive holiday gift idea?

Can Merch Express rush a holiday merchandise order?

Yes. Merch Express takes rush orders for a rush fee. Calgary customers can get same-day pickup on a pullover hoodie or cotton t-shirt. Order before noon, Monday to Friday.
